The office building +SHIFT NOGIZAKA, which pursues a symbolic and beautiful architecture that stands out amidst the scenery, is located just a minute’s walk from Nogizaka Station. Ever since of the launch of the brand +SHIFT, which proposes new ways of working and workspace, I handled the architecture, interior design of all floors, and brand design.

Proposing office spaces that expand the imagination beyond the contemporary era where unprecedented ways of working and communication were explored, such as working remotely. All 12 floors above ground were designed as setup offices, with a relaxed lounge on the first floor and a rooftop terrace on the top floor provided. Bright natural light and solid wood and fabric was extensively incorporated in the interior to create warmth and comfort.

A shot of the entrance lounge, which looks like a painting. While dealing with a variety of materials, the space is composed in harmony.

+SHIFT NOGIZAKA dyed in the color of the sky at dusk. From deep within the skin, the low-color-temperature orange-tinted light of the downlights warmly illuminates the city.

Reflecting the ethos of "establishing roots in this environment and nurturing innovative ideas and services," the exterior is enveloped in a skin that resembles intertwined roots. This skin also blocks direct sunlight from entering the interior. Additionally, the structure of the building twists, providing additional design accents while introducing balconies within the gaps formed by the twist, augments the overall volume. The design not only emphasizes aesthetics but also prioritizes the comfortable experience of each user.

While 99% of people desire to work in good spaces, I wonder if the 1% who disregard space as a waste of management resources are neglecting the environment.

Originally, Japanese offices were often like “chicken coops,” with desks and people lined up. However, if you want good eggs, not just a quantity of eggs, a spacious environment is better. Therefore, the darker the original space, the more a brighter space stands out, making office design easier to contrast than luxury hotels or restaurants.

There are times when I admire my past bold architectural projects, which I normally do not do.

Thoughts

I cannot design when the number of people per square meter is strictly determined as a coefficient. If I cannot enjoy designing it, I have no choice but to decline.

There have been times when I wanted to create something eye-catching, driven by my own desires.

When building a structure, there are always moments when I am afraid of criticism. It’s a job that requires overcoming fear with conviction and turning it into confidence, while combining it with a bit of a mad sense.
