“DAFT about DRAFT” is an original lifestyle brand born out of ideas that have resided in projects and my mind. The flagship store, opened in Omotesando in 2022, showcases furniture and products that I design, as well as select brands from both domestic and international sources. It’s a space where interior design is proposed with freedom of creativity.

Upon opening the doors adorned with unique handles carved from stone, there is an open area where anyone can shop freely. By designing the ceiling to be low, I created a contrast with the salon space beyond the glass doors, allowing visitors to enjoy the world of “DAFT about DRAFT”.

In the open salon space, dynamic chandeliers suspended from the ceiling serve as focal points, with furniture, products, and foliage symmetrically arranged around them. The sunlight streaming in from the terrace bathes the space in a luxurious glow, complementing the chandeliers. Meanwhile, the glass facade is designed to softly welcome sunlight. The entire space resembles a painting that was crafted with perspective and shading techniques.

It is a single picture from every angle. The rhythm created by the highly flexible space and furniture is a joy to see and experience.

"I aim to craft modern furniture pieces that narrate stories within a space, even if it's just one item," -- I always hold this sentiment while also designing architecture and space. From furniture to space, and from space to furniture. With great delight in this reversibility, a particularly flexible interior space has been realized at “DAFT about DRAFT”.

Thoughts

In spaces, there exist both “good spaces” and “bad spaces”.

Thoughts
002

There are many stores that lack symbolic spaces, neglecting their significance. Like humans, spaces too possess hidden identities.

Thoughts
004

Designing the “interior” while utilizing furnitures to adorn the space is akin to preparing a “dish” you like in your favorite bowl and serving it with your preferred presentation.

Thoughts
005

For example, when considering a chair, the curve of the armrest angle can determine the entire design. Sometimes the design is completed by a single detail, while other times the design starts from the overall shape and goes into detail.

Thoughts
007

When designing a space and one is unable to find suitable furniture despite searching everywhere, there comes a moment of “let’s make it ourselves,” leading to designing furniture myself.

Thoughts
008

Drawing inspiration from products to envision space. Drawing inspiration from space to envision products. Creativity flows both ways.

”Please design the space from just one chair” — such a request would be incredibly fascinating. Like creating a movie from a single melody.

Thoughts
011

At times, it’s better to embrace simplicity rather than to create something that doesn’t quite feel right intuitively.

Thoughts
012

Just as some excel at playing instruments but struggle with composing, mere knowledge and practice aren’t enough for creation—where creativity is precious.
